Lord Stunell OBE, PC, who passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024, was a strong advocate for energy-efficient homes and had been President of the National Home Improvement Council since 2020.

Lord Stunell has been a friend of the Council since its creation in the mid-70s, working alongside then-President Lord Ezra of Horsham. Members of the NHIC helped Lord Stunell take the Sustainable and Secure Buildings Private Member’s Bill through Parliament in the early 2000s, as part of the bill, Lord Stunell wanted to see all new and existing homes either built or renovated with security and energy-saving features, with Stunell saying that he wanted the bill to promote greener and safer homes for all. During his time as President, he continued to challenge government and industry to innovate, reduce the energy demand from all homes and improve the overall quality of home improvement.

NHIC Chief Executive Anna Scothern said, “We are greatly saddened to hear of Lord Stunell’s passing. I have been overwhelmed by the response from colleagues, who have reflected on their memories of Lord Stunell and the outstanding work he did for the sector”.

“He was a remarkable individual who made a lasting impact in many ways”.

“Lord Stunell was a true champion for the NHIC and will be greatly missed”.

“He was gracious and tenacious, both as President of the NHIC and as a public servant”.

“Lord Stunell’s contribution and enthusiasm enriched the work of the NHIC, and I am sure this will be built upon further as a fitting legacy to his memory and motivation to those who follow”.

“This news deeply saddens us, and our thoughts and sympathies are with his family now”.

“A loss to many as a friend and the industry has lost a strong champion”.

Lord Stunell’s passing leaves a void in the NHIC, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide the Council in its mission to inspire change and improve homes.

Lord Stunell’s dedication and contributions to the National Home Improvement Council and the home improvement industry will not be forgotten. His legacy will inspire and guide the NHIC to promote safe, healthy, affordable homes for everyone in the UK. The NHIC will continue to work towards raising standards and delivering quality in the sector while embracing and driving change.
