Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning remains the principal concern of the Gas Safety Trust. Speaking to an NHIC Members Forum, Chris Bielby MBE, the Trust’s Chairman explained that the number of fatalities each year in the UK was ‘modest’ by comparison with many other countries in Europe.
This was not, however, an excuse for complacency – far from it!
In fact the Gas Safety Trust aims to maintain highest possible level of public, commercial and industrial awareness of the problem.
So the Trust is very active in promoting the important safety issues involving carbon monoxide poisoning. Chris Bielby emphasised that it was ‘a perennial problem affecting everybody, even more so at this time when home heating is switched on and thousands of young people are living in digs for their university studies.’
He also underlined the summertime hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning associated with leisure pursuits such as camping and caravanning and often simply having a barbecue. Especially the dangers of using gas heaters inside tents and marquees.
Since its foundation in 2005 raising awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning and improving gas safety has been a key issue for the Gas Safety Trust. Trustee, Chris has over 35 years of industry experience and has spent the past 25 years lobbying and canvassing support for gas safety issues.
