Birmingham City University has become one of ten UK universities to be awarded the EcoCampus Platinum award. It underlines the university’s achievements in improving environmental performance and practice.
EcoCampus is the leading national environment management system and award scheme for the higher and further education sectors, enabling universities to identify, evaluate, manage and improve their environmental activity and duties.
The platinum award is the equivalent to achieving the International Standard 14001, used by companies worldwide. Rebecca Cottington, the university’s environmental officer, says: “The university has achieved a 19.4% reduction in carbon emissions from energy use in buildings when compared to 2005/06 and a 37% reduction in our water use since 2005/06.”
Birmingham City University won a first class honours in 2012 in the People and Planet University Green League table, published in the Guardian newspaper.
