The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) welcomes today’s announcement from the Chancellor confirming support for the Construction Talent Retention Scheme.

Formally launching later this month, the Construction Talent Retention Scheme is a partnership between industry and Government to secure essential talent in the UK’s construction sector.

Announced by the Chancellor in today’s statement, the scheme is run by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) which is made up of trade and business associations from across the supply chain.

The online portal supports redeployment of staff at risk of redundancy from across the sector, while also enabling temporary employee loans between businesses. It also gives displaced workers from other sectors a route to find new employment in construction, while offering businesses a platform to find the skills they need.

The not-for-profit programme has funding secured until the end of April 2021, providing a free online platform for any business or organisation looking to hire, while ensuring that candidates’ skills and experience are given a prominent platform within the wider industry. Businesses and employers interested in finding out more are encouraged to register their interest at: www.trs-system.co.uk/construction

“We welcome the announcement from the Chancellor confirming support for the Construction Talent Retention Scheme. It is a crucial tool for keeping skills within the sector and will make a huge difference to construction workers and their families that have been affected by redundancies or job losses due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The Talent Retention Scheme has the full backing and support of those working in the RMI and Home Improvement Sector” said Anna Scothern, Chief Executive NHIC

As a key member of the CLC’s Refurbishment, Maintenance and Home Improvement workstream, the NHIC are working behind the scenes with other stakeholders to launch the website as soon as is possible and we will keep you informed of progress on our website and across social media.

NOTES TO EDITORS

NHIC

Through our corporate and associate membership options, the NHIC represents almost 100,000 businesses carrying out millions of refurbishment, maintenance and home improvement jobs each year.

Representing 100’s of trades and sub-trades NHIC membership contributes over £13Bn each year to the UK Economy with members delivering over 1 million hours of CPD training each year to raise standards and deliver quality improvements to the nation’s homes.

This makes the NHIC the most representative and influential body for Home Improvement and RMI professionals in the UK. The true voice of home improvement.

It’s more than 40 years since the National Home Improvement Council was launched and there remains much to be done and new challenges to address, not least supporting the economic, green and socially conscious recovery post COVID19.

As the umbrella organisation or the sector, the NHIC supports its members in their areas of expertise which allows us to make a real contribution to the future improvement of the nation’s homes.

Post COVID19 recovery together with the new demands on homes for home-working, home-schooling support and home-exercising alongside the demographic demands of an increasing and ageing population, energy efficiency, carbon emissions, fuel poverty and the ever-present concerns regarding an ageing workforce and skills shortage, the need to raise awareness and the standards of home improvement is never-ending.

To improve the quality, safety and affordability of building work in and around the home

To improve living standards and reduce fuel poverty in homes across the UK

NHIC Response to COVID 19

Sharing thinking, guidance, and support between members to support householders has always been at the heart of the NHIC. From the very beginning of the lockdown due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the NHIC opened its doors to any individual or organisation working in the refurbishment, maintenance, and home improvement industry. Giving free access to member benefits at no cost. Welcoming members and non-members alike to learn from the weekly webinars, share ideas and enjoy the camaraderie as part of the weekly digital drop-ins and receive daily political briefings on both COVID19 as we all general political news. The NHIC through in it together has allowed the RMI industry to come together to support householders from all tenures during these unprecedented and uncertain times. After all, we are all #inittogether

The Government has moved to secure vital talent needed to build the UK’s recovery from Covid-19, protecting employment for thousands of people working in the construction sector.

Construction Talent Retention Scheme will keep skills in the sector, matching displaced workers with employers seeking new staff

Scheme is based on proven model to safeguard talent in the aerospace and automotive sectors

Supported by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and all leading sector trade bodies

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, today (8 July) announced the launch of the Construction Talent Retention Scheme, a partnership between the Government and industry to secure essential talent in the UK construction sector.

The Construction Talent Retention Scheme, to formally launch later this month, will be an online portal that supports redeployment of staff at risk of redundancy across the sector, while also enabling temporary employee loans between businesses. The Scheme give displaced workers from other sectors a route to find new employment in construction.

Construction Leadership Council (CLC) co-chair Andy Mitchell added: “This is a great example of what we can achieve when we work collaboratively with Government and we look forward to continuing in this spirit when the proposals and recommendations of our broader Roadmap to Recovery are published. In the meantime we will work with our members and industry stakeholders to encourage the scheme’s use and success.”

Association for Consultancy & Engineering (ACE) chief executive Hannah Vickers said: “This is a proven solution with a strong track-record in other sectors, cross-industry support and pledges from our leading employers. It is vital we keep the skills in our sector to avoid a talent drain and is the only way we will be able to ramp-up activity to lead the recovery of the wider economy and deliver growth through new buildings and infrastructure.”

Group chief executive of Mace, and skills workstream lead at the Construction Leadership Council, Mark Reynolds, said: “The CLC’s Construction Talent Retention Scheme will offer a critical lifeline for the construction industry, it will help the industry retain and share our exceptional talent needed to deliver vital infrastructure and support the country’s recovery plan. The scheme is a great example of Government and industry collaboration during these challenging times for the construction sector. We are delighted to support the initiative as a real solution to protecting employment for thousands in our industry, continuing to build a better future.”

The not-for-profit programme now has funding secured until the end of the financial year, providing a free online platform for any organisation looking to hire, while ensuring that candidates’ skills and experience are given a prominent platform within the industry.

Businesses can register their interest in the scheme at: www.trs-system.co.uk/construction

This category is open to all companies and authorities who can demonstrate innovative and educational practices which reduce the impact and effect of fuel poverty or reduce the number of households living with ‘heat or eat’ choices.

The NHIC Educational Trust was established as a charitable foundation in 1980 to complement the broad objectives of the NHIC. It achieves this by extending the aims of the NHIC in educating central and local government of the need to improve the UK’s housing stock and also in educating homeowners on the benefits of improving their homes. Lester Corney, Chairman of the Trust said, “Reducing fuel poverty lies at the heart of our activities which is why the NHIC Educational Trust is delighted to sponsor this important Award.”

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) was launched in 1974 and today, through its corporate and associate membership options, it represents over 30,000 businesses carrying out more than five million jobs each year in and around the home. Representing 100’s of trades and sub-trades, the NHIC membership contributes over £13bn to the UK economy while delivering thousands of hours’ training and professional development, making the NHIC the most representative body for home improvement professionals in the UK.

Anna Scothern, Chief Executive at NHIC, said “We are excited to welcome again the NHIC Educational Trust as sponsor of the category ‘Innovation and Education to Reduce Fuel Poverty’. Having an award which recognises the innovation and educational work which is carried out across the country to reduce fuel poverty, one of our key objectives, is an important part of our Annual Awards ”.

The NHIC works hard to raise the profile of high standards of energy efficiency and modernisation in all homes alongside the reduction of carbon emissions and promotion of the benefits of home improvement to householders.

Entries are now invited from across the spectrum of housing modernisation projects and associated activities in the following eight categories:

Innovation and education to reduce fuel poverty, sponsored by the NHIC Educational Trust

Delivering community benefit through home improvement, sponsored by Quality Assurance National Warrantees

Campaign of the Year, sponsored by Haymarket Media Group

The NHIC has an important Educational Trust. Established as a charitable foundation in 1980 to compliment the broad aims of the NHIC, it was found that many organisations were more comfortable talking to a charity rather than to an organisation such as the NHIC.

The Trust’s altruistic aim is to educate the general public, politicians, local authorities, housing associations and others in the importance of modernising and improving in order to maintain the housing stock, enhance the quality of peoples’ life and to assist in reducing fuel poverty.

One of the Trust’s biggest achievements was to undertake a major Neighbourhood Revitalisation Project. The pilot scheme funded projects in four towns using money from the Trust and with the support of the Halifax Building Society, which underwrote it.
